Still Here

Well, it has been a while!
Here we go. We wrapped up the summer with a very successful season of fishing.
Both the Crow Lake Classic bass tournament and the new Nestor Falls Musky Cup
tournament had very good outcomes.
Our whitetail hunt was a little tough, but some VERY large bucks were taken.
Cindy and I both harvested good bucks and we also teamed up on a nice bull moose.
With that said, the wolf numbers are still high and taking a toll on our deer and moose,
not to mention the beaver, mice and everything else they eat.
The ice fishing has been good, even the crappies are biting!

Happy Holidays and The Best Of The New Year To You All!!!

Yep, more info to come soon.

The walleye bite continues to be excellent with most fish being caught on main lake humps from ten to twenty five feet in depth.  Jigging with minnows and leeches has proven a good tactic and the trollers are also having good success with spinner rigs and crawlers.

The lake trout bite has been very reliable as of late. Jig fisherman are having good success in 85 to 105 feet of  water. Proven lures lately have been the buzz bomb, heddon sonar, and the river2sea diver vib 65.  Down rigger fisherman are also getting in on the action trolling in over 100 feet of water and looking for suspended fish from 80 to 95 feet. Spoons and spinners tipped with a medium large minnow seem to be the ticket.

Musky fisherman on Lake of the Woods are seeing numerous fish through out the day but getting them to hit has been a little more difficult. They are finding them on both the rock piles and saddles and a few are having some success in the slop on top water. The key seems to go back to the spotted fish later in the day and try downsizing to lures like the Mepps Muskie Killer. Crow Lake has been producing but many of the anglers are having better luck trolling in the evening along the deeper side of main lake reefs and the steeper walls with breaks. Lures proving successfull are the XRMAG-30 Series and also the Depth Raider Series.

With the warm weather we have been having the top water smallmouth bite has been excellent. Heddon Torpedoe and the Rapala Skitter Pop are both excellent choices right now. For bait fisherman both leeches and crawlers are the ticket for some easy action.

One Week In

Well, we are one week into the 2012 musky season and all is normal out on the lakes.
The best daily catch I was told about, was from three fellas that were out on opening
day and had boated a total of 23 muskies! The best fish out of the batch, was a 53"
hog!!! I seen pictures of it (along with a few of the others they caught) and she was
a true sow. Most others have been seeing good numbers of fish, but did not have the
"magic" to make many of the fish open their mouths.
Our walleye bite has been nothing shot of fantastic! Loads of good eating sized fish
and I do not think I have ever been told as many times about the number of big fish
being released.
The guides that stop/shop in our store are telling me that they have never seen the fishing
any better.
There you have it.
Now is the time to get out there.

It's Happening

Ok, here is the scoop.
The fishing in our area has been nothing short of Fantastic!
99.9% of the guys coming in are have a great bite, no matter
the species. Crappies are the only fish that are coming a little
tough.
For the most part, the weather has been very good too. Our
lake levels were low coming into the season, but with the last
couple of rains it is now within reason.
We have been busy at our little store, and I am so glad we have
our youngest daughter Emily here to help. She has been a wizzard
on the keyboard when it comes to issueing licenses on the new
computer system.

Summer Patterns

Pushing through week two of the walleye season finds the fish in a summer patten.
Most of the fishermen have been having very good success on the mid-lake reefs.
A jig and minnow is the bait of choice for all the local guides.
There are however, a fair number of walleyes in the weeds. It is just a little harder
to fish the weeds for most anglers.
The lake trout are moving down in most lakes. The 60 - 80 foot range has been the best
range of water. Most anglers are jigging Vibe 65, Vibe 80 and Heddon sonars.
The crappies tried to get a spawn in, but every time they moved in to get the job done
the weather would turn and it would push them back out.
The northern fishing has been the best it has been in years. Hardly a day goes by that I
do not hear of a fish being caught in the mid to high 40 inch range caught.
All in all, it has been a great start!!!!
Hope you all had a great spring and are getting to do some open water fishing.
If you have not been up to see us yet, please make sure you do.

The Opener

Saturday was the opening of our walleye season and they had the "feed bag" on!!!
Sounded like everyone had a good bite.
The majority of the fish came out of the 6 to 12 foot range in the sandy bays. Some
of the fishermen fished the current in the channels in 15 to 25 feet and did well too.
The lake trout are still up. The best bite has been trolling. Rapala DT's and flutter
spoons pulled at 3/4 to 1-1/4 mph was really good yesterday. Crow Lake Specials
with a cisco was also working.
The crappies were just getting into the weeds (mainly big males) and the cold windy
weather kicked them off some, but they will move back in today.
Lots of Northerns too. They are in the bays chasing the shiner minnows. They are
eating anything you throw that looks like a minnow.
If you have any question about our store, our area or our fishing, please feel free to
email or call us and we will do our best to make sure your time is a good time.

Are You Ready???

All the lakes in the area have been ice-free for a couple of weeks now and the fisherman
are starting to trickle through.
So far we have mainly had trout fisherman in, only a couple of groups of pike and crappie
fisherman.
For the most part, all have had good fishing!
Our water temps are still a little cool for the crappies, the ones that they are catching are
still in the fall/winter holes.
The trout on most of the lakes have had the "feed bag" on for the last week or better.
The troll has been good on Whitefish Bay in the 20 - 40 foot range, most are using crank baits and
minnow immitations. I have had a few groups doing well jigging with tubes too.
The water temps on Crow lake are in the mid-40's and the trout are EVERYWHERE!
Trolling in the 20 - 40 foot range has been producing the biggest fish, while jigging in the 50 - 80
foot depths is producing the better numbers of eating sized fish.
If you have yet to get your trip planned, you had better get at it!!!
If you need any questions answered, feel free to email or give us a call.
We are hoping to see you all soon,
Phillip
